Batman is created by Bob Kane and written by Bill Finger under DC Comics. Also known as the “Caped Crusader” or the “Dark Knight,” he first appeared in the 27th issue of Detective Comics in May 1939. Batman is a vigilante who fights crime in the fictional Gotham City at night. Behind the mask, he is actually Bruce Wayne, a billionaire who spends his time with women, managing his corporation, and doing charitable acts. His sidekick is Robin and he is assisted by his butler, Alfred Pennyworth. Batman does not possess superpowers but uses physical strength, intellect, and science and technology in fighting against evildoers.
Highly regarded as a cultural icon, Batman has been adapted into several animated series, films, and comic book rip-offs. He has been depicted into varying characters as in a comic book series of a middle-aged Batman. Writers eventually returned The Dark Knight to his roots as could be seen in the success of 1989 film Batman by Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins in 2005.
