The Joker is the greatest arch-enemy of DC Comics’ Batman. Depicted as a master criminal who is sometimes a goofy trickster and at other times, a violent sociopath, his first appearance was in Batman #1, which came out in the spring of 1940. The Joker was conceptualized by Jerry Robinson, Bill Finger, and Bob Kane. He was the one who brought about misfortunes to the life of Batman, including the death of his sidekick Robin (Jason Todd).
There is quite a few versions of the story as to how the Joker came to me. The most popular is him accidentally falling into a large vessel of toxic wastes. He does not die but the ordeal leaves him with physical changes – bleached skin, red stretched lips, and green hair – that make him look like a clown. Wizard: Magazine of Comics, Entertainment, and Pop Culture ranks the Joker as 2nd in the Top 100 Comic Book Villains of All Time.
