Spiderman came into being as a Marvel Comics superhero in August 1962. Written by Stan Lee and drawn by Steve Ditko, Spiderman tells the story of an orphan who grew up with his Aunt May and Uncle Ben. As a teenager, Peter Parker dealt with his inadequacies and loneliness, struggles that enabled young readers to relate with him on a deeper level.
A science whiz, Parker was one day bitten by a radioactive spider, rendering him capable of climbing walls, react to dangers with his enhanced spider sense, and shoot spider webs. The character of Spiderman brought the superhero to new grounds as teen heroes served as mere sidekicks before his time. He did not have a mentor such as in the case of other young superheroes like Robin and Bucky. Using gadgets he invented himself to enhance his superpowers, Peter fights several enemies, including Doctor Octopus, the Green Goblin, the Sandman, the Lizard, and Venom.
