Superman, a brainchild of Jerry Siegel and Canadian artist Joe Shuster, was created in 1932. The character made his first appearance in Action Comics #1 under Detective Comics. More than a superhero, Superman is considered by many Americans as a cultural icon. The success of comic books was, in a large part, attributed to the popularity of Superman, who is characterized by his blue, red, and yellow costume with a stylized “S” insignia on his chest.
In the original story, Superman was born in the planet Krypton. His father sent him to Earth on a rocket ship minutes before Krypton was destroyed. The boy grew up with his foster parents, a farmer and his wife in Kansas, who calls him Clark Kent. Clark discovers his superhuman abilities little by little as he grew up. He used his powers to fight for humanity while working as a reporter for the Daily Planet.
