The first episode of Thundercats aired in 1985. Comprising of 65 episodes on its first season, the animated television series was produced by Rankin/Bas Production. A new format of the series was followed for seasons 2 to 4 where there are 20 episodes in each season. Distribution rights for the Thundercats series was bought by Warner Brothers which led to the airing of Thundercats on Toonami, Cartoon Network’s afternoon program.
The story of the Thundercats animated series is about “Cat like” humanoid aliens who flee their dying planet named Thundera while fighting their enemies, The Mutants of Plun-dar. Their enemies aim to get hold of the “Eye of Thundera” which holds the power of the Thundercats.
An animated feature film of the Thundercats is being produced by Spring Creek Productions and is scheduled to be released by summer of 2010.
Marvel Comics also produced a comic series for Thundercats from 1985 to 1988. In 2003, DC Comics developed a two series comic for Thundercats.
