Unit blocks are standardized pieces of wooden toy blocks that are used in kindergarten or preschools. It is popularly used by the Montessori Method of teaching. In fact, unit blocks are also called standard unit blocks or kindergarten blocks.
These are often used in the school’s sensory activity for the child. In sensory activities, the aim is to refine the senses. By the use of the wooden blocks, tactile and visual senses are stimulated. Tactile because by touch children recognize shapes ad size relationships like short shorter ad shortest; also, thin and thick, short and tall and, big and small. Visual because some of these blocks come in colors and stacked to accustom the eyes to the primary or secondary colors.
These blocks are said to be standardized because there is a precise measurement for these blocks.
According to Wikipedia, ‘a unit block is 5.5 inches long, 2.75 inches wide, and 1.375 inches thick’. Bigger ones are double the size of a unit block and smaller ones come in fractions of a unit block.
